How many filters are inside the Austin Air unit?

There are four:
The first layer is the Austin Air Permafilt™ pre-filter. This cotton felt filter removes dust, hair and pet dander.
The next layer is the medium particle filter which removes molds, spores and pollen.
In the HealthMate, the next layer is the Activated Carbon mixed with Zeolite.
The innermost layer is the True Medical Grade HEPA.
For the Allergy Machine, the third layer is the the True Medical Grade HEPA.
The inner most layer is Activated Military Carbon Cloth, which is also called HEGA (High Efficiency Gas Absorption).

What is activated carbon?

Activation is a process which increases the total surface area of the carbon. Increased surface area = increased adsorption of chemicals, odors and gases in your air purifier.

What's Zeolite

Zeolite is a naturally occurring mineral that is mined in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Zeolite is highly adsorptive of airborne chemicals and gases.

Do all the HealthMate Family of Air Purifiers removes VOC's from the air?

Yes, all Austin Air filters remove VOC's (Volatile Organic Chemicals) odors and gases from the air.
The HealthMate has 15 lbs. of Carbon Zeolite and removes over 3000 VOC's.
The HealthMate Plus has the same Carbon Zeolite base that is treated with Potassium Iodide for enhanced adsorption.
The Pet Machine also uses the same Carbon Zeolite base that is treated with AmmoniaSorb™ and is uniquely capable of removing pet smells from the air.

What is True Medical Grade HEPA and why is it important?

True Medical Grade HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Absorbing) represents a standard in air filtration. By definition, True Medical Grade HEPA must remove 99.97% of all particles greater than 0.3 microns. The True Medical Grade HEPA removes mold spores, dust mites, pet saliva, pet dander, pollen and micro-organisms including bacteria and virus from the air. The Austin Air Standard size models use over 60 square feet and the Junior size models use over 30 square feet of True Medical Grade HEPA.

How are the HealthMate Family of Air Purifiers affective against bacteria and virus?

The micro-organisms are trapped in the True Medical Grade HEPA media, where they are unable to survive in the filter do to lack of water.

How does the HEGA filter work?

HEGA, an Austin Air exclusive, stands for High Efficiency Gas Absorption. It is also called Military Carbon Cloth. This form of activated carbon is a woven material that has a massive surface area and is highly adsorptive of chemicals, odors and smoke. Since the HEGA releases no dust, Austin Air uses this material as the inner most layer of the filters in the Allergy Machine, Baby's Breath and Sleep Machine. The HEGA also provides additional protection from particulates in the air.

What are the differences between the HealthMate and Allergy Machines?

The HealthMate filter uses activated granular carbon treated with zeolite as the middle layer and True Medical Grade HEPA as the inner most layer. The HealthMate Standard filter weighs 22 lbs.
The Allergy Machine uses True Medical Grade HEPA as the middle filter layer and the HEGA filter as the innermost layer because of the HEGA's dust free nature. The Allergy Machine Standard filter weighs 8 lbs.

How do I choose between the HealthMate and the Allergy Machine?

Both machines work exceptionally well for people with allergies and asthma. The HealthMate is more effective for people with chemical sensitivities. The Allergy Machine provides the best particulate filter available and is also the best filter for odors and smoke.

What is the difference between the HealthMate and HealthMate Plus?

Both air purifiers have over 60 square feet of True Medical Grade HEPA and remove 99.7 % of particles 0.3 microns in size from the air. Both have 15 lbs. of Carbon Zeolite mix and remove over 3000 chemicals and gases from the air. HealthMate Plus enriches the Carbon Zeolite mix with Potassium Iodide and has enhanced capacity to remove chemicals including formaldehyde, sulfuric acid and ammonia.

What problems does HealthMate Plus address?

HealthMate Plus is the best air purifier for both airborne chemicals and particulates. HealthMate Plus is used by people with allergies, asthma, attention deficit disorder, autism, emphysema and multiple chemical sensitivities. HealthMate Plus is used by people who live or work in urban or industrial environments, artist's studios, beauty salons, garages or new homes.

What is the difference between the Standard and Junior Models?

The Standard unit is 23" high and 14.5" wide. It has over 60 square feet of True Medical Grade HEPA. The Standard has a CFM (cubic feet per minute) rate of 400 and cleans rooms up to 1500 square feet.
The Junior unit is 16.5" high and 11" wide. It has over 30 square feet of True Medical Grade HEPA. The junior has a CFM (cubic feet per minute) rate of 200 and cleans rooms up to 700 square feet.

Do Austin Air purifiers produce toxic substances?

No, the HealthMate Family of Air Purifiers do not produce ozone, ions or negative ions. Ozone can irritate the lungs and agrivate respiratory illness including asthma, emphysema and bronchitis. Both the EPA and the ALA (American Lung Association) have determined that ozone is a toxic pollutant and can be dangerous to your health.
Austin Air purifiers have all steel housings and have a baked on powder coat finish that does not off gas.

How do I calculate the true cost of owning an air purifier?

(Purchase Price + Replacement Filter Cost + Energy Consumption) = Total Cost
The Austin Air HealthMate Family of Air Purifiers all have a Five Year Filter Life! Other brands of air cleaners would require 10 -20 changes of filters in that same time period. Other bands of air cleaners have a higher energy consumption. Austin Air provides you with the very best in air purifiers and saves you money too!

Austin Air filters last 5 years. How?

Austin Air uses the best quality of filter media and it uses generous quantities of it. It's a winning combination, as the filters do a phenomenal job and work for a full five years!

How will I know it's time to change the filter?

Are filter changes difficult?

No. SImply unplug the unit and turn it upside down. Unscrew four screws and remove the bottom plate. The pre-filter and filter lift out for easy replacement. It takes about 5 minutes.

Can I use a different filter type in my machine.

Yes. Simply determine you model size:
The Standard unit is 23" high and 14.5" wide
The Junior is unit is 16.5" high and 11" wide.
Than choose the Austin Air filter type which best meets your needs.

Austin Air has a Clean Air Pocket™. Is that a new fashon statement?

No, but the Clean Air Pocket is quite remarkable. Place an Austin Air purifier near you and in 15 seconds, you are breathing cleaner, fresher air.
